Yellowman is a renowned Navajo artist who has been painting for over 50 years. He comes from a family of weavers and beadworkers and has been drawing and painting since he was a child. He is most known for his moving acrylics and watercolors that celebrate Native beauty and convey a feeling of fierceness and strength. His wife is of Kiowa heritage and his paintings often depict scenes of Plains Indian life in stunning detail and color. Yellowman is also known for powerful portraits of warriors. In addition to being a distinguished artist, Yellowman is also an active public speaker who speaks on topics related to Native American rights, traditions, history and art.
Yellowman’s subject are often inspired by his wife’s Kiowa heritage and include beautiful landscapes that depict the beauty of Plains Indian life as well as moving portraits of warriors defined by their dignity and strength. Until they were confined to reservations, the Kiowa were a migratory people who hunted and gathered food, following the buffalo through the Southern Plains. In his impressive works, Yellowman depicts scenes of everyday and ceremonial life that honor and celebrate the traditions, history and way of life of Plains Indian tribes.
For centuries the Pueblo people have painted petroglyphs, depicting their relationship with the natural world. Fine art painting is a relatively new medium for Native American artists, first practiced in the early 20th century by young Pueblo artists who drew upon their traditions and Euro-American modernist painting. Pueblo painting has become a vibrant and innovative art form that often depicts contemporary subjects and reaches new audiences.Read our Native American Sculpture and Painting Collector's Guide.
