  • “Native Joy for Real” marks Joy Harjo’s debut as a singer/songwriter, the album brimming with soul and beauty. Harjo has created ten singular invocations of contemporary life, on and off the reservation, that deal with the joys and the tribulations of everyday existence. The music blends traditional Native rhythms and singing with jazz, rock and blues and a touch of hip hop. The songs feature memorable refrains, smoky sax work, subtle powwow based beats, and uplifting lyrics.

  • Joy Harjo is an internationally known performer and writer of the Mvskoke-Creek Nation, and the author of ten books of poetry. A critically acclaimed poet, her many honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Josephine Miles Poetry Award, the William Carlos Williams Award, and the American Indian Distinguished Achievement in the Arts Award. She lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
  • Deeply influenced by her Native heritage and the Southwest landscape, Joy Harjo’s poetry often explores themes of remembrance and survival. In 2015 Harjo was awarded the Academy of American Poets’ Wallace Stevens Award, one of the most prestigious honors given annually to a poet, carrying with it a stipend of $100,000. Alicia Ostriker, the Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets, said: “Throughout her extraordinary career as poet, storyteller, musician, memoirist, playwright and activist, Joy Harjo has worked to expand our American language, culture, and soul. A Creek Indian and student of First Nation history, Harjo is rooted simultaneously in the natural world, in earth—especially the landscape of the American Southwest—and in the spirit world. Aided by these redemptive forces of nature and spirit, incorporating native traditions of prayer and myth into a powerfully contemporary idiom, her visionary justice-seeking art transforms personal and collective bitterness to beauty, fragmentation to wholeness, and trauma to healing.”
