Owned and operated by the 19 Pueblo Indian Tribes of New Mexico, Shumakolowa Native Arts brings you an unsurpassed collection of original, handcrafted works of Native American art. We were founded in 1976 to be a place that truly gathers and showcases work from Pueblo and Southwestern Native artists. We offer traditional and contemporary arts and crafts from award-winning, internationally renowned artists as well as emerging talents, selecting artworks that are valuable for their beauty, craftsmanship and connection to tradition.
We are the retail arm of the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and this connection with a world-class museum and cultural center allows us to offer a level of expertise and breadth of knowledge about Pueblo and Southwestern Native American history, culture and art that is unmatched. In addition, we have an in-depth purchase and certification process and can guarantee that every piece of fine art we offer is an original and authentic work handcrafted by Native American artists as defined by the Indian Arts and Crafts Act of 1990. For more than 35 years, we have developed lasting relationships with artists, dealers and collectors, and we take pride in being a trusted destination for fine Native American art.
Our name, Shumakolowa, comes from the Zuni word for dragonfly and is pronounced “Shoe-mu-koh-low-wa.” The dragonfly is an important animal for the Pueblo people of New Mexico and other tribes of the Southwest. These special creatures are seen as messengers, speaking to the thunder and clouds to bring moisture and blessings to the people. At Shumakolowa, we believe in the spiritual value of art and its ability to share knowledge and beauty across cultures. We believe that by connecting artists and collectors we are playing a vital role in celebrating and preserving distinctive art forms that are found nowhere else on earth.
