Albuquerque, NM – New Mexico Centennial, the organization planning New Mexico's year-long statewide Centennial celebration in 2012, announced its partnership with Bolton Inc/Pendleton Woolen Mills to design and weave an honorary Centennial blanket.
The New Mexico Centennial blanket is designed around the red Zia sun symbol. Four is a sacred number which symbolizes the Circle of Life: four winds, four seasons, four directions and four sacred obligations. The circle binds the four elements together. While the Zia symbol is closely associated with the Pueblo of Zia, the symbol is also used by numerous pueblos throughout New Mexico. The Zia symbol is the center point of the New Mexico state flag and license plate.
